1. SCOPE

1.1 Scope. This commercial item description covers two hand operated pruning shears capable of lopping small diameter tree branches.

2. CLASSIFICATION

2.1 Classification. The shears shall be of the following types and sizes, as specified (see 7.2):

Type I - Wooden handle shears
Type II - Shears with handles other than wood

Size 1 - 24 inch Length (61.8 cm), Minimum Cutting Capacity 1-1/2 inches (3.8 cm)
Size 2 - 27 inch Length (68.6 cm), Minimum Cutting Capacity 1-5/8 inches (4.1 cm)
Size 3 - 30 inch Length (76.2 cm), Minimum Cutting Capacity 2 inches (5.1 cm)

3. SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS

3.1 Type 1, Wooden handle shears. The type I lopping shears shall be provided with straight grain hardwood handles. The handles shall be smoothly finished to provide comfortable hand grips. A clear varnish, lacquer, shellac, polyurethane, or samilar coating shall completely cover the handles to prevent absorption of water. The type I shears shall be similar in design to figure 1.
